We sat with Benjamin von Deschwanden, Co-Founder and CPO at Acodis AG, to ask him his thoughts on the future of AI in healthcare.

Do you think the increased usage of Generative AI and LLMs will have a dramatic impact on the healthcare industry and, if so, how?

I think that the strength of Generative AI lies in making huge amounts of information accessible without needing to manually sift through the source material. Being able to quickly answer any questions is going to be transformative for everyone working with increasingly bigger data sets.
The challenge will be to ensure that the information we get by means of Generative AI is correct and complete – especially in healthcare – as the consequences of wrong data can be fatal.

We at Acodis are actively working on practical applications of Generative AI inside our Intelligent Document Processing (IDP) Platform for Life Science and Pharma clients to drive efficiency and accelerate time to market, whilst controlling the risks.

Do you think the increased usage of Generative AI and LLMs will have a dramatic impact on the healthcare industry and, if so, how?

Generative AI is just a part of the disruptive impact of all AI tech on the healthcare industry. It allows to dramatically reduce time efforts, costs and chances of mistakes. Generative AI and LLMs are applied to automating clinical documentation, drug discovery, tailoring of treatment plans to individual patients, real-time clinical decision support and health monitoring, extracting valuable insights from unstructured clinical records, streamlining administrative tasks like billing and claims processing, providing instant access to comprehensive medical knowledge. And this list continues.

Do you think the increased usage of Generative AI and LLMs will have a dramatic impact on the healthcare industry and, if so, how?

Everywhere in the world we are reaching the limitations of our healthcare systems. In parts of the world that have performed relatively well the impact of an aging population is threatening sustainability, in low-income countries inclusive healthcare will be unattainable with rising needs as result of climate change. The only way to solve this, is to use transformative approaches that allows us to place the patient at the center. AI is transforming how we interact with each other at all levels, it is now the time where it will completely transform healthcare.

Do you think the increased usage of Generative AI and LLMs will have a dramatic impact on the healthcare industry and, if so, how?

The use of generative AI and LLMs carries a lot of promise. Beyond re-stating the obvious use-cases, there are some counterintuitive benefits that may arise from the deployment of AI tools. Two examples that come to mind are AI democratising medical expertise and making medicine a more “human” profession. One might think that these AIs would centralise medical expertise even more in high-tech hospitals. On the contrary, if deployed thoughtfully, AI has the potential to democratise medical knowledge, enabling healthcare providers in remote or less-developed areas to access world-class expertise. Moreover, by taking over the rote and analytical tasks in clinical medicine, AI will allow clinicians to focus on the aspects of their job which are most human, like empathy, communication, and human understanding.

Whether the impact of generative AI will be truly dramatic will depend on how we navigate the inevitably incoming trough of disillusionment that will follow our current stage in AI’s hype cycle. Will we be able to overcome the challenges of over-reliance, data privacy, healthcare inequality, etc. and will regulators catch up with the rate of technological development?

Do you think the increased usage of Generative AI and LLMs will have a dramatic impact on the healthcare industry and, if so, how?

 Yes - we can automate a lot of manual and time-consuming tasks - across the board from clinic, patient & HCP experiences to administrative processes around insurance and payment.

Do you think the increased usage or Generative AI and LLMs will have a dramatic impact on the healthcare industry and, if so, how?

LLMs will be having dramatic impact on various areas of healthcare, e.g. (i) healthcare data interpretation, curation and recovery (electronic medical records), (ii) scientific and medical literature search and (iii) disease diagnostics and the selection of treatment algorithms.
