An Interview with Dr Sandeep Reddy, Director, Healthcare Management Program, Deakin University

Ahead of his Tech Talk in comprehensive AI in healthcare evaluation framework and its application at Intelligent Health 2022 (7-8 September, Basel, Switzerland), we asked Dr Sandeep Reddy, Director, Healthcare Management Program, Deakin University his thoughts on the future of AI in healthcare.

If you could solve any global health problem in the world with AI, what would it be?

This is clear to me, it would be addressing the chronic disease burden. Management of chronic diseases costs health services the most of all healthcare conditions. The growing aged population adds to the complexity of managing chronic conditions. Even, the WHO has declared chronic conditions as a significant health issue for health systems to address. Therefore, this would be the area I would dedicate AI to respond to.

Presuming that was solved, what would your second choice be?

The second area would be improving access to health services, especially for rural and regional communities. Due to healthcare workforce and infrastructure limitations, many rural and regional communities suffer from inadequate healthcare access. AI can play a significant role in assisting with healthcare access.

How do you think AI will make its biggest mark in healthcare in the next 5 years? 10 years? 20 years?

In the next five years, AI will support clinicians in triaging and administrative matters. In 10 years, AI will be integrated in clinical information systems and help with clinical decision support. In 20 years, you will have AI clinicians providing autonomous low risk healthcare services.

What excites you most about the application of AI in healthcare?

The potential for addressing the chronic disease burden and improving healthcare access.

What’s your biggest fear in relation to the application of AI in the health/medicine field?

Lack of governance (safety, ethics and quality) and transparency in many AI models development and deployment in healthcare concerns me significantly.

How do you think AI will cause human contact in healthcare to change in the future?

In many instances, it will take away the administrative and mundane task burden from clinicians to allow them more time interacting with patients and addressing their queries.

What does AI mean for the skill requirements of health professionals? How will it change?

It is important the clinicians are trained to be digital literate in order to practice 21st century medicine. Unfortunately very few medical schools in the world teach medical informatics.

Which 2 people do you admire most in the world of AI in healthcare in terms of their work?:

There are many but want to recognise the pioneers of AI: Alan Turing and Professor Raj Reddy.

It is an excellent and popular platform to showcase AI in healthcare innovations to a global audience.

What are your personal goals from the summit?

To network and learn, in addition to presenting my innovative research.
