We sat down with Peter Grolimund, Board Member of Swiss Health Data Space, to ask him his thoughts on the future of AI in healthcare.

Do you think the increased usage of Generative AI and LLMs will have a dramatic impact on the healthcare industry and, if so, how?

Yes.

  • It will extract data from unstructured information to provide new services (e.g.patient path)
  • It will make the secondary usage of data available to everybody and support our decision making
  • It will decrease the gap of know-how between the health-care provider and the patient
  • It will will increase the healthcare quality, and if made accessible to the patient / to us all, it will improve all of our data-literacy and decision making and as such, will move our conversation with health care provider to a new level
  • The health-care provider on the other side will be in a position to spend more valuable time with the patient instead of performing administrative work

If you could solve any global health problem in the world with AI, what would it be?

It will:
  • Milden the negative implications of the shortage of available experts in any country
  • Identify and avoid inefficient or even harmful treatments
  • Improve efficient supply and distribution of pharmaceuticals
  • Shorten reaction times to fight global infectious diseases efficiently

What do you think will be the biggest impact of AI and tech in the healthcare sector in the next 5 years?

Efficiency and quality gain over all. Transparency about the quality and outcome of healthcare services. The potential to put the patient/citizen at the center of a data-driven service.

What's your biggest fear around the application of AI/tech in the healthcare field?

Manipulation of data or algorithms which might lead to fatal decisions. Lack of quality and certification of AI/LLM based services and loss of trust leading to a negative reputation. Hacks of AI/LLM based algorithms supporting devices leading to fatalities.

What two people do you admire most in the world of healthcare?

As I'm not a individual people-oriented person, I strongly believe that the the key to the success of data driven services are all of us, in case we do claim our health data and do share it anonymously for the secondary usage (meaning AI/LLM based services).
