We sat down with Raul Villamarin Rodriguez, Vice President of Woxsen University, to ask him his thoughts on the future of AI in healthcare.

Do you think the increased usage of Generative AI and LLMs will have a dramatic impact on the healthcare industry and, if so, how?

Yes, the increased usage of Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) has the potential to dramatically impact the healthcare industry in several ways:

  • Enhanced Diagnosis and Treatment: LLMs can analyse vast amounts of medical data, including patient records, clinical trials, and medical literature. This allows them to identify patterns and correlations that may be missed by human doctors, potentially leading to earlier and more accurate diagnoses and personalised treatment plans.
  • Drug Discovery and Development: Generative AI can be used to analyze molecular structures and design new drugs, accelerating the drug discovery process and potentially leading to the development of more effective treatments for various diseases.
  • Improved Patient Care: LLMs can be used to develop chatbots and virtual assistants that can answer patient questions, provide health information, and even offer basic mental health support. This can improve patient engagement and empower them to take a more active role in their healthcare.
  • Streamlined Administrative Tasks: LLMs can automate repetitive administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments, generating reports, and coding medical records. This can free up valuable time for doctors and nurses to focus on patient care.

If you could solve any global health problem in the world with AI, what would it be?

If I could solve any global health problem with AI, it would be antimicrobial resistance (AMR). AMR occurs when bacteria, viruses, and other microbes become resistant to the drugs designed to kill them. This is a serious and growing threat, as it makes it increasingly difficult to treat common infections. AI could be used to develop new antibiotics, identify patients at risk of developing AMR infections, and optimise treatment regimens to minimise the development of resistance.

What do you think will be the biggest impact of AI and tech in the healthcare sector in the next 5 years?

The biggest impact of AI and technology in the healthcare sector in the next 5 years could be in the area of personalised medicine. AI can analyse a patient's individual genetic makeup, medical history, and lifestyle factors to predict their risk of developing certain diseases and tailor preventive and treatment plans accordingly. This could lead to a future where healthcare is more proactive and preventative, potentially improving patient outcomes and reducing overall healthcare costs.

What's your biggest fear around the application of AI/tech in the healthcare field?

My biggest fear around the application of AI/tech in the healthcare field is the potential for bias and discrimination. AI algorithms are trained on data sets created by humans, and these data sets can reflect the biases present in society. If not carefully addressed, biased AI could exacerbate existing health disparities and limit access to quality care for certain populations.

What two people do you admire most in the world of healthcare?

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus: The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), leading the global fight against infectious diseases and promoting health equity around the world.

Dr. Jennifer Doudna: A biochemist who co-invented CRISPR, a revolutionary gene-editing technology with the potential to cure genetic diseases.
