Ahead of Intelligent Health (13-14 September 2023, Basel, Switzerland), we asked Helge Buess, Associate Director Population Health, Novartis Foundation, his thoughts on the future of AI in healthcare.
Do you think the increased usage or Generative AI and LLMs will have a dramatic impact on the healthcare industry and, if so, how?
LLMs will be having dramatic impact on various areas of healthcare, e.g. (i) healthcare data interpretation, curation and recovery (electronic medical records), (ii) scientific and medical literature search and (iii) disease diagnostics and the selection of treatment algorithms.
If you could solve any global health problem in the world with AI, what would it be?
I'd be solving the enormous global equity gap in health.
What do you think will be the biggest impact of AI and tech in the healthcare sector in the next 5 years?
There will be a radical improvement in the speed and accuracy of diagnostics carried out by healthcare providers but also by patients themselves.
What's your biggest fear around the application of AI/tech in the healthcare field?
AI will be applied too abundantly in inconsiderate and unethical ways (e.g. ignoring potential inherent bias in training data and algorithms).
What two people do you admire most in the world of healthcare?
> Bill Gates for the impact that the B&M Gates Foundation has made on millions of lives over many years
> Anthony Fauci for having been the steadfast defender of evidence-based science and medicine against huge adversities
