We spoke to Max Welling, Vice President Technologies, Qualcomm & Research Chair, Machine Learning, University of Amsterdam. Q: What excites you most about the application of AI in healthcare?
The enormous potential to improve healthcare services.
Q: What’s your biggest fear about the application of AI in health/medicine?
That physicians will not adopt it because they are too conservative & afraid.
Q: How do you think AI will make its biggest mark in healthcare in the next 5 years? 10 years? 20 years?
Privacy preserving distributed (aka federated) learning on the enormous amounts of healthcare data. Automated diagnosis and treatment planning.
Q: How do you think AI will change human contact in healthcare?
More telemedicine, perhaps with virtual reality at some point.
Q: What does AI mean for the skill requirements of health professionals? How will it change?
They need to learn more datascience skills.
