Exploring the Future of Healthcare with Panos Karelis

Posted by Intelligent Health on Sep 9, 2024 10:21:37 AM

We sat down with Panos Karelis, Director of Customer Experience and Insights at Intelligencia AI to ask him his thoughts on the future of AI in healthcare.

Do you think the increased usage of Generative AI and LLMs will have a dramatic impact on the healthcare industry and, if so, how?

Even though they are in their infancy, generative AI and large language models (LLMs) have already significantly impacted the healthcare industry and will continue to mature.

Gen AI interactions mimic how humans converse with each other. We naturally ask questions or describe tasks to others in complete sentences, providing some context rather than relying on keyword searches to generate the information needed. Communicating with an LLM makes the experience feel much more personal than, for example, querying a database using code.

For now, I see Gen AI as a “killer app,” making it easier for people to find and compile information. In healthcare, this can add significant value to researchers looking for specific data and help with more administrative, time-consuming tasks. Gen AI can also help you curate and interpret information in charts, tables or other visuals.

Some of the most interesting and practical use cases for Gen AI I’ve heard from our pharmaceutical customers include information compilation for drug labeling and document review. Research is an incredibly time-consuming and manual process, and if Gen AI can do some of the heavy lifting, it frees up time for other essential tasks.

With all of the excitement around Gen AI, we cannot forget that it doesn’t work flawlessly. The models hallucinate and makeup information, so we must be careful and can’t blindly trust the output. But still, starting with an imperfect AI-influenced draft is far better than a blank slate.

Do you think the increased usage of Generative AI and LLMs will have a dramatic impact on the healthcare industry and, if so, how?

Yes, the increased usage of Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) has the potential to dramatically impact the healthcare industry in several ways:

  • Enhanced Diagnosis and Treatment: LLMs can analyse vast amounts of medical data, including patient records, clinical trials, and medical literature. This allows them to identify patterns and correlations that may be missed by human doctors, potentially leading to earlier and more accurate diagnoses and personalised treatment plans.
  • Drug Discovery and Development: Generative AI can be used to analyze molecular structures and design new drugs, accelerating the drug discovery process and potentially leading to the development of more effective treatments for various diseases.
  • Improved Patient Care: LLMs can be used to develop chatbots and virtual assistants that can answer patient questions, provide health information, and even offer basic mental health support. This can improve patient engagement and empower them to take a more active role in their healthcare.
  • Streamlined Administrative Tasks: LLMs can automate repetitive administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments, generating reports, and coding medical records. This can free up valuable time for doctors and nurses to focus on patient care.

We sat down with Peter Grolimund, Board Member of Swiss Health Data Space, to ask him his thoughts on the future of AI in healthcare.

Do you think the increased usage of Generative AI and LLMs will have a dramatic impact on the healthcare industry and, if so, how?

Yes.

  • It will extract data from unstructured information to provide new services (e.g.patient path)
  • It will make the secondary usage of data available to everybody and support our decision making
  • It will decrease the gap of know-how between the health-care provider and the patient
  • It will will increase the healthcare quality, and if made accessible to the patient / to us all, it will improve all of our data-literacy and decision making and as such, will move our conversation with health care provider to a new level
  • The health-care provider on the other side will be in a position to spend more valuable time with the patient instead of performing administrative work

Exploring the Future of Healthcare with Benjamin von Deschwanden, Co-Founder and CPO at Acodis AG

Posted by Intelligent Health on Sep 14, 2023 10:34:35 AM

We sat with Benjamin von Deschwanden, Co-Founder and CPO at Acodis AG, to ask him his thoughts on the future of AI in healthcare.

Do you think the increased usage of Generative AI and LLMs will have a dramatic impact on the healthcare industry and, if so, how?

I think that the strength of Generative AI lies in making huge amounts of information accessible without needing to manually sift through the source material. Being able to quickly answer any questions is going to be transformative for everyone working with increasingly bigger data sets.
The challenge will be to ensure that the information we get by means of Generative AI is correct and complete – especially in healthcare – as the consequences of wrong data can be fatal.

We at Acodis are actively working on practical applications of Generative AI inside our Intelligent Document Processing (IDP) Platform for Life Science and Pharma clients to drive efficiency and accelerate time to market, whilst controlling the risks.

Exploring the Future of Healthcare with Dr Zaid Al-fagih, Co-Founder & CEO, Rhazes AI

Posted by Intelligent Health on Sep 8, 2023 8:54:15 AM

Ahead of Intelligent Health (13-14 September 2023, Basel, Switzerland), we asked Dr Zaid Al-fagih, Co-Founder & CEO, Rhazes AI, his thoughts on the future of AI in healthcare.

Do you think the increased usage of Generative AI and LLMs will have a dramatic impact on the healthcare industry and, if so, how?

The use of generative AI and LLMs carries a lot of promise. Beyond re-stating the obvious use-cases, there are some counterintuitive benefits that may arise from the deployment of AI tools. Two examples that come to mind are AI democratising medical expertise and making medicine a more “human” profession. One might think that these AIs would centralise medical expertise even more in high-tech hospitals. On the contrary, if deployed thoughtfully, AI has the potential to democratise medical knowledge, enabling healthcare providers in remote or less-developed areas to access world-class expertise. Moreover, by taking over the rote and analytical tasks in clinical medicine, AI will allow clinicians to focus on the aspects of their job which are most human, like empathy, communication, and human understanding.

Whether the impact of generative AI will be truly dramatic will depend on how we navigate the inevitably incoming trough of disillusionment that will follow our current stage in AI’s hype cycle. Will we be able to overcome the challenges of over-reliance, data privacy, healthcare inequality, etc. and will regulators catch up with the rate of technological development?
